Are Tomb Guard Chariots good?

Tomb Guard Chariots are very good on the charge and hold up better than ordinary chariots when charged. Three of them won 78% of their charges and 25% of fights when charged, against 55% and 7% for Skeleton Chariots.

By DaveUpdated 2026-09-242026 Rules & ErrataHow I test

Quick answer: it depends whether Tomb Guard Chariots get the charge

If they charge
78% across eight opponents
If they receive
25%: better than Skeleton Chariots, still poor
Best targets
Knights of the Realm (91%) and Empire halberdiers (90%) on the charge
Struggles against
Ironbreakers: 42% charging, 33% receiving

Tomb Guard Chariots are still a charging unit; they just fall over less badly than ordinary chariots when caught.

How many simulations I ran

I ran 32,000 complete combats with 3 Tomb Guard Chariots: 2,000 against each of eight opponents while the chariots charged, and 2,000 more against each while the opponent charged. These were the results.

Three Tomb Guard Chariots is the minimum legal unit and costs 159 points, 9 over my usual budget. Against Ironbreakers, 125 of their 4,000 fights hit my 12-round cap without a result, and I counted those as no win.

Why they beat Skeleton Chariots

Better impact hits, 4+ armour, S4 crew with Cleaving Blow and Indomitable (2) all help. On the charge they dealt about 5.6 wounds in the first round, against 4.7 for Skeleton Chariots, and their crews kept fighting after the impact.

They cost 18 points more, so this is not a straight upgrade per point, but in my opinion the gap in results is bigger than the gap in cost.

How I would use them

Exactly as I would use Skeleton Chariots, with a little more forgiveness: find a clear lane, hit a target that is already busy, and keep them away from Ironbreakers.

My conclusion

Based on these results, I would use Tomb Guard Chariots as a premium charging unit when the list has the points. I would not treat them as a unit that can safely accept a charge.
