Warriors of Chaos builds: which Mark, Cult and weapon?

Warriors of Chaos builds live or die on a handful of choices, so I ran 478,800 simulated combats to see which Marks, Cults and weapons actually matter.

By DaveUpdated 2026-09-242026 Rules & ErrataHow I test

My short answer: Khorne rewards units that make the charge. Nurgle is the most reliable defensive Mark in pure melee. Carrion Crow is a surprisingly strong Marauder cult, because +1 Toughness keeps crossing wound breakpoints. Berserker weapon choice decides whether they are a hammer or a receiver, and Huscarls care more about model count than about their Mark.

How many simulations I ran

I ran 478,800 complete combats: 342,000 in the main matrix of 57 builds, and 136,800 in a control with body count held fixed. These were the results.

At 500 combats per matchup the Chaos build numbers are the most stable on the site, but they still come from clean frontal duels with no magic. Tzeentch and Slaanesh in particular do things these duels cannot see.

A Mark or Cult is not free. In several families, paying for the blessing costs you a model, so I ran both a practical ~140-point comparison and a control with body count held fixed.

What each blessing does in melee

How I applied each Mark and Cult. Marauders use the Razing of Westerland Chaotic Cults; Berserkers take neither.

BlessingEffect I usedMy read
KhorneFrenzy: +1 Attack when charging, or after a follow-up under the 2026 ruleStrong offensive bias.
NurgleEnemies reroll natural 6s To Hit against the bearerBroad, repeatable defensive value.
Slaanesh+1 Initiative in the first round; Panic immunityUseful only when the Initiative breakpoint matters.
TzeentchFlaming Attacks and Magic Resistance (−1)My melee lab understates it because I did not model magic.
UndividedReroll failed Fear, Panic and Terror testsSituational in isolated combats.
Bloodied HoundOnce per game, after a passed Ld test: +1 WS until next Start of TurnDepends on whether WS crosses a To Hit breakpoint.
Carrion CrowOnce per game, after a passed Ld test: +1 ToughnessOften excellent because it changes To Wound thresholds.
Slithering SerpentOnce per game, after a passed Ld test: Poisoned AttacksOffensive spike; matchup-dependent.
Fell RaptorOnce per game, after a passed Ld test: 6+ ward against non-magical woundsDefensive but swingier than +1 Toughness.

What my lab leaves out

My conclusion

Based on these results, I would use Khorne on units that charge, Nurgle on units that hold and Carrion Crow on Marauders. I would not pay for a Mark or Cult when it costs a Huscarl or Marauder model.

FAQs

What is the best Mark of Chaos?

It depends on the job. Khorne was the best offensive Mark on every unit that can take one, and Nurgle the best defensive one. With 8 Chaos Warriors fixed, Khorne won 84.7% of charges and Nurgle 51.2% of fights when receiving.

Is the Mark of Tzeentch bad?

Not necessarily. My melee duels did not model magic, so Tzeentch’s Magic Resistance and casting synergy did nothing here. I would not judge it from these numbers.

Is a Mark of Chaos always worth the points?

No. On Huscarls, six Undivided models beat five Khorne ones overall, and 18 unculted flail Marauders gave the best points-normalised Marauder charging result.
