Are Centigors with throwing axes good?
Centigors with throwing axes are not a good shooting unit. They finished 24th of 29 at short range in my tests, because seven models throwing one axe each is not much firepower.
Quick answer: it depends what you point Centigors with throwing axes at
- Role
- Fast cavalry, with a throwing axe each
- Good against
- Skaven Dregs (3.4, 18th): best ranking
- Struggles against
- Knights of the Realm (0.5, 26th), Ironbreakers (0.4, 23rd), Empire State Troops (2.3, 23rd), Skaven Dregs (3.4, 18th), Rat Ogres (1.5, 23rd), Skirmishing Empire Archers (2.1, 25th)
- Range
- Loses some damage at range (62% kept)
Fast cavalry, with a throwing axe each is the job Centigors with throwing axes did best in my testing, and it is the yardstick I would judge them by, rather than their 24th-of-29 overall average.
How many simulations I ran
I ran 120 volleys with Centigors with throwing axes: ten fresh volleys at each of six targets, at both long and short range. Those main volleys were part of the 4,080 I ran across 29 shooting units, and these were the Centigors with throwing axes results.
A simulation is only as good as its assumptions, and the ones behind my Centigors with throwing axes results leave out terrain, magic, characters and a thinking opponent. With ten volleys per result, Centigors with throwing axes (1.7) and Chaos throwing axes (1.7) finished level at short range, so I would not read anything into their order. They tell you what to point Centigors with throwing axes at, not what will happen every time.
My verdict
I would take Centigors for what they do in combat and on the move, not for the axes. Their best result was 3.4 wounds into Dregs at short range, from 9-inch Strength 5 throws.

At long range Centigors with throwing axes kept 62% of their short-range damage. Their best long-range target was Skaven Dregs (1.6).
Against my two heavily armoured targets, Knights of the Realm and Ironbreakers, Centigors with throwing axes averaged 0.5 wounds at short range. That puts them 26th of 29 for cracking armour.

My conclusion
Based on these results, I would use Centigors with throwing axes for mobile pressure, with a few Strength 5 axes on the way in, and not for a dedicated shooting job, to get the most out of them on the battlefield.
