Are Ungor archers good?
Ungor archers are good, and they were the best unit I tested into skirmishers. My 28 skirmishing Ungors with shortbows did 5.6 wounds per short-range volley into skirmishing archers and finished sixth of 29 overall at short range.
Quick answer: it depends what you point Ungor archers at
- Role
- Skirmish-clearing fire at close range
- Good against
- Skirmishing Empire Archers (5.6, 1st)
- Struggles against
- Ironbreakers (0.7, 15th), Rat Ogres (2.4, 15th)
- Range
- Needs to get close (59% kept)
Skirmish-clearing fire at close range is the job Ungor archers did best in my testing, and it is the yardstick I would judge them by, rather than their 6th-of-29 overall average.
How many simulations I ran
I ran 120 volleys with Ungor archers: ten fresh volleys at each of six targets, at both long and short range. Those main volleys were part of the 4,080 I ran across 29 shooting units, and these were the Ungor archers results.
These Ungor archers numbers are not the whole story, because my dice roll on an empty table without terrain, spells, characters or a real player on the other side. With ten volleys per result, Ungor archers (3.3) and Empire handgunners (3.2) finished level at short range, so I would not read anything into their order. Use these Ungor archers figures as a strong guide to the job, not a promise.
My verdict
In my opinion Ungor archers are the Beastmen shooting unit worth taking. They kept only 59% of their damage at long range, though, so they need to close in.

Range and armour
At long range Ungor archers kept 59% of their short-range damage, so they need to get close to do the job. Their best long-range target was Skaven Dregs (4.0).
Against my two heavily armoured targets, Knights of the Realm and Ironbreakers, Ungor archers averaged 1.3 wounds at short range. That puts them 11th of 29 for cracking armour.
Rules that shaped these numbers
- The Ungors skirmished in the best legal formation my geometry search found.
- Ungor units need the army’s compulsory Gor Herd first.
How I set up the test
I fielded 28 Ungors with free shortbows (140 points) as Skirmishers, arranged in the legal formation that let the most of them shoot. My method page has the full setup.

My conclusion
Based on these results, I would use Ungor archers for hunting skirmishers and light infantry at short range, and not for long-range support or cracking armour, to get the most out of them on the battlefield.
